“Vision Pro” Trademark by Huawei May Force Apple to Rebrand Its Headset

In Brief

In 2019, Huawei filed for the “Vision Pro” trademark in China, potentially posing a branding challenge for Apple’s new headset.

Huawei’s move could potentially force Apple to undertake a rebranding effort for their headset in order to avoid trademark conflicts in the Chinese market.

As Apple unveils its much-anticipated AR headset, Vision Pro, a report reveals a surprising twist: the name “Vision Pro” has already been registered by Huawei Technologies Co, a Chinese tech powerhouse. This trademark clash places Apple in a precarious position, potentially hindering its ability to introduce the cutting-edge mixed-reality headset in China.

"Vision Pro" trademarked by Huawei may force Apple to rebrand its headset

About four years ago, on May 16, 2019, Huawei authorized the product trademark “Vision Pro” in China. The trademark application for Huawei’s Vision Pro carries the registration number 38242888, granting exclusive rights to its use from November 28, 2021, until November 27, 2031, as stated in the patent application.

While Huawei maintains a webpage featuring “Huawei Eyewear” under the brand Huawei Vision, it has probably reserved the trademark “Vision Pro” for a future eyewear product.

Huawei’s Vision Pro trademark covers a wide range of products and services, including LCD TVs, head-mounted virtual reality devices, radio devices, handprint testing machines, switches, electronic signal transmitters, transmitters, radio equipment, modems, videophones, signal repeaters, mobile phone belts, smartphones, downloadable computer application software, tablet computers, program-controlled telephone exchange equipment, speakers, audio video receivers, microphones, sound transmitters, televisions, video cameras, headphones, portable media players, and more.

According to Huawei Central, Huawei’s “Vision Pro” trademark is unrelated to Apple’s product. Huawei already has different lineups of “Vision” products, including Vision smart eyeglasses and Vision smart TVs, which launched before Apple’s headset.

Apple may have to rename the product specifically in China due to trademark infringement. However, this scenario might not apply to global markets, and Apple will release the headset early next year in the US. Apple Vision Pro’s availability in China is yet to be confirmed.

Apple’s headset was previously speculated to be named “Reality One” and “Reality Pro,” while the headset’s operating system was thought to be “RealOS” and “RealityOS.”
