The Sandbox hosts its first metaverse wedding at Singapore’s Alkaff Mansion
The Sandbox, Smobler Studios, and 1-Group made the metaverse wedding happen. Groom Clarence Chan and bride Joanne Tham held their 70s disco glam wedding in the metaverse on September 17 at the digital replica of the heritage building, The Alkaff Mansion.
The Sandbox is one of the leading decentralized virtual worlds focused on gamified experiences and digital real estate. Smobler Studios is a metaverse architecture and design agency based in Singapore, which recently raised $1.2 million. 1-Group is Singapore’s independent lifestyle group that works with the country’s top restaurants, cafes, bars, and clubs.
1-Group’s Alkaff Mansion is one of the most exquisite places for garden weddings in Singapore. The press release described the mansion as “adorned with a gazebo and European-style fountains with welcoming outdoor spaces […] endowed with a broad balustrade stairway, verdant canopies and expansive porches, The Alkaff Mansion makes a spectacular wedding venue – now in the metaverse too.”
Smobler Studios recreated the mansion in The Sandbox with its peculiar architecture and designs. Guests who attended the physical wedding at a hotel also received a chance to join the celebration in the virtual world. After The Sandbox co-founder and COO Sebastien Borget officiated the marriage and pronounced the couple husband and wife, custom-made 70s-themed avatars danced to the music.
The newlyweds shared their first kiss in the metaverse and, eventually, exited the virtual world and continued celebrating in real life.
Even though Clarence Chan’s and Joanne Tham’s metaverse wedding was the first in The Sandbox, similar celebrations had happened before in other virtual spaces. In June, footballer Kevin Prince Boateng married model Valentina Fradegrada in the OVER metaverse. Recently, the fast food chain Taco Bell introduced the first-ever Metaverse Wedding Package in Decentraland.
“We are glad to be able to pave the way for the future of weddings and intimate gatherings, where great memories are forged in a space where we can keep replaying it. The Alkaff Mansion is one of Singapore’s most romantic locations set against luscious greenery. We are very happy that the elegance and beauty of The Alkaff Mansion was wonderfully replicated in The Sandbox by Smobler Studios,”
said Jessie Tan, marketing representative of The Alkaff Mansion.
