PayPal Integrates Into Meta’s Muse As Agentic Commerce Race Intensifies

PayPal announced a partnership with Meta that brings PayPal’s checkout directly into Meta’s personal AI agent, Muse. The integration was confirmed in a post on X in which the payments company said it is “excited to partner with Meta to enable PayPal customers to seamlessly shop and check out using their Muse personal AI agents across PayPal merchants worldwide.”
The deal gives Muse an additional major payment rail as Meta builds shopping capabilities directly into its agent, while offering PayPal access to an emerging form of commerce in which an AI assistant can search for products and complete transactions on a customer’s behalf.
Strategic Stakes in Agentic Commerce
Muse, launched on September 8, goes beyond conventional chatbots: it can act for users — booking travel, filling out forms and completing transactions — working in the background and requesting approval before sensitive actions such as purchases. At launch, Meta equipped the agent with Stripe’s Link, which has more than 300 million users and is accepted at over one million businesses. At those merchants, Muse checks out with the shopper’s saved payment method; elsewhere, Link generates a single-use virtual card scoped to an approved purchase, with the shopper confirming the total in chat. PayPal now adds its own payment network and merchant base to this infrastructure.
The timing is notable. Muse recorded 2.8 million downloads across the U.S. and Canada in its first 12 days, reaching the No. 1 spot on Apple’s U.S. App Store free-app ranking within ten days of launch. Analyst interest has followed: Youssef Squali estimates Muse could generate an additional $28.5 billion in revenue for Meta by 2030 as heavier users adopt paid tiers, calling it Meta’s clearest attempt yet to build a non-advertising revenue stream.
The partnership also aligns with PayPal’s broader positioning for AI-driven shopping. Earlier this month, the company said it is supporting WebMCP, an emerging standard designed to make websites easier for AI assistants to discover, navigate and connect with checkout, allowing merchants to participate in agent-driven commerce without rebuilding their storefronts. PayPal has additionally deepened collaborations with Google on agentic shopping — announced in September 2025 — and with Mastercard in October, integrating Mastercard’s Agent Pay platform into PayPal’s branded checkout wallet. PayPal executives indicated in July that agentic payments and digital identity are expected to become more significant from 2028 onward.
Together, these moves signal an industry-wide transition from consumers manually browsing websites toward AI agents that compare products and initiate purchases autonomously — a shift in which control of the checkout button, and the rails behind it, is becoming a central competitive battleground.
