OpenAI Launches Rosalind Biodefense Program To Support Pandemic Preparedness And Biosecurity Research

In Brief

OpenAI has launched Rosalind Biodefense, providing U.S. government agencies and approved partners with access to its biology-focused AI to support pandemic preparedness, biosecurity, and outbreak response.

OpenAI Launches Rosalind Biodefense Program To Support Pandemic Preparedness And Biosecurity Research

AI research company OpenAI announced the launch of the Rosalind Biodefense Program, an initiative designed to provide approved government agencies and qualified research organizations with access to GPT-Rosalind, the company’s advanced reasoning model developed for life sciences research. The program is intended to support the development of AI-powered tools aimed at strengthening pandemic preparedness, biological threat detection, and public health response capabilities.

According to OpenAI, the initiative focuses on accelerating defensive applications of artificial intelligence in the life sciences by enabling trusted organizations to transform advanced AI capabilities into practical biodefense solutions. Participants will receive access to GPT-Rosalind along with support for projects focused on areas such as epidemiological modelling, disease surveillance, outbreak preparedness, screening systems, public health interventions, and other biosecurity-related applications.

The company stated that the first group of participating organizations is developing technologies that address different stages of biological threat management, ranging from prevention and early detection to resilience planning and the development of medical countermeasures. OpenAI said the program is intended to demonstrate how advanced AI systems can support researchers, public health authorities, infrastructure operators, and scientific institutions in responding to both naturally occurring and engineered biological risks.

The initiative is also aimed at improving the efficiency of scientific and public health workflows. Potential applications include literature analysis, simulation, data integration, decision-support systems, research planning, protocol development, and scientific communication. OpenAI indicated that applications are welcomed from academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, government-affiliated entities, mission-driven companies, and other qualified research teams pursuing projects with clear public benefit.

OpenAI Expands GPT-Rosalind Access to Government and Public Health Partners

As part of the rollout, OpenAI is expanding access to GPT-Rosalind for selected U.S. government agencies and allied organizations engaged in public health and biodefense missions. The company said these institutions may use the model to support functions including early-warning systems, outbreak response planning, diagnostics, preparedness programs, and the development of medical countermeasures. Access will be provided through a controlled framework intended to maintain appropriate safety, security, and accountability standards.

OpenAI also announced collaborations with several organizations. The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory plans to incorporate GPT-Rosalind into a protein engineering platform to accelerate the screening of mutant enzymes for therapeutics, countermeasure development, and emerging biological threat analysis. In addition, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has been granted access to the model to support its 100 Days Mission, an initiative focused on accelerating vaccine development for epidemic and pandemic threats, including the current Ebola outbreak.

The company described the program as an initial phase of a broader effort to advance the use of artificial intelligence in public health, biodefense, and life sciences research. OpenAI stated that the Rosalind Biodefense Program is open to qualified applicants globally and that it intends to expand collaboration with government and research partners over time while continuing to refine access policies, support frameworks, and safety measures for the responsible use of advanced life sciences AI.
