L’Oréal Paris introduces metaverse looks for Ready Player Me avatars
In Brief
Maybelline New York and L’Oréal Professionnel partner with Ready Player Me for a set of ten makeup and hair looks
The customized avatars can be used for over 3,000 metaverse platforms
L’Oréal Paris subsidiaries Maybelline New York and L’Oréal Professionnel partner with Ready Player Me to release a set of hair and makeup looks for the metaverse.
Players can now customize their avatars with ten Maybelline and L’Oréal looks created in partnership with computer-generated imagery artist Yvan Rochette. Ready Player Me will offer five makeup looks and five hairstyles for the interoperable avatars that can be used for more than 3,000 metaverse platforms.
L’Oréal Paris didn’t want realism; instead, it aimed to create colorful looks inspired by gaming and virtual worlds:
“Our approach was not to duplicate realistic looks — it was to push the boundaries of creativity and bring people looks that they could not have in real life,”
says the chief metaverse and Web3 officer at L’Oréal, Camille Kroely.
Notably, this is not L’Oréal’s first step into the Web3 space. In October, the company announced the launch of a metaverse startup accelerator developed in partnership with Meta and business school HEC Paris. The six-month program will take place in Meta’s Station F space in Paris and will focus on avatar development, virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, user experience, and 3D production.
L’Oréal’s Maybelline New York has also previously experimented with the metaverse. The company created a virtual loft that features immersive experiences and promotes the brand’s cosmetic products.
