Fidelity: Bitcoin’s August Rally Is No Proof The Bear Market Is Over

Fidelity Digital Assets has cautioned that the strong cryptocurrency market rally observed in late August does not necessarily mark the end of the ongoing bear market. In a recent quarterly outlook, the firm acknowledged that Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana all posted substantial monthly gains, with Bitcoin surging over 25% during the third week of August alone, while Ethereum and Solana climbed 34.1% and 28% respectively.
These movements represented the most significant monthly advances for digital assets in nearly a year. However, analysts emphasized that such price action alone is insufficient to confirm a definitive trend reversal, and investors should maintain a long-term perspective rather than attempt to time cyclical turning points.
The late-August upswing followed an extended period of low volatility that persisted from June through mid-August, during which selling pressure appeared to exhaust itself and digital asset prices traded toward the lower end of their historical ranges. According to Fidelity, this sequence of compressed volatility followed by rapid upward expansion mirrors patterns that have historically accompanied bear market bottoms.
Additionally, recent adverse developments that would typically trigger sell-offs, including a hardware wallet security incident and stalled legislative progress on the CLARITY Act, failed to push prices lower, further suggesting that the market may be approaching a cyclical low. Some investors are monitoring November 2026 as a potential bottom target based on Bitcoin’s four-year cycle theory, which points to the November 2022 low as the previous cyclical trough. Nevertheless, the firm stressed that these cycles lack precise regularity and cautioned against attempting to time the market, noting that the ultimate low could have already occurred in July or may still lie ahead.
On-Chain Fundamentals Meet Policy Developments
Beneath the surface of declining prices, blockchain network fundamentals demonstrated notable resilience throughout the bear market. Stablecoin transaction volumes have reportedly surpassed Visa’s by a factor of 2.3, while tokenized real-world assets have recorded their fastest annual growth to date in 2026.
Fidelity regards these adoption indicators as the underlying fundamentals of digital asset networks, suggesting that the core value proposition of blockchain infrastructure remained intact even as market capitalization contracted. The firm observed that adoption metrics temporarily decoupled from price action during the downturn, much as they did during the 2021–2022 bear market, and the August rally may indicate the beginning of a recoupling between network usage and valuation.
On the policy front, the industry continues to await legislative clarity. The CLARITY Act, designed to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework and clarify federal oversight responsibilities for digital assets, has successfully passed the House of Representatives but remains under consideration in the Senate, with no clear timeline for advancement.
Proponents argue that the legislation would provide greater regulatory certainty and support continued innovation within the domestic digital asset ecosystem. Separately, the Securities and Exchange Commission recently proposed Regulation Crypto Assets, which would define conditions under which certain early-stage digital asset offerings may qualify for exemptions from securities registration requirements. The proposal is currently in its public comment period and represents a meaningful step toward a more tailored regulatory approach for the digital asset sector.
