Canopy Ships Banyan Protocol Upgrade Live, With No Downtime

Canopy
has announced it completed its first named protocol upgrade, Banyan (v2.0), live and with no downtime. The company, which builds a framework for launching onchain apps and sovereign blockchains, ran a network-wide consensus change through its Canopy Auto Update feature. The headline is not only the technical feat: according to Canopy, the same in-place upgrade ability now belongs to every application built on its infrastructure.

Canopy completed Banyan (v2.0), its first named protocol upgrade, live and with no downtime, via its Canopy Auto Update feature.

The upgrade ran a network-wide consensus change during the pre-launch period; mainnet is now live.

According to Canopy, every app built on the network inherits the same ability to evolve in place, without redeploying or migrating users. Banyan also brings fuller compatibility with standard Ethereum tooling and performance improvements.

Canopy says it completed Banyan (v2.0), described as its first named protocol upgrade, without pausing the network. In practice, the company took its entire network through a coordinated consensus change, live, using its in-house Canopy Auto Update feature. The upgrade was run ahead of the public launch to prove the mechanism during a critical phase; mainnet is now live.

Adam Liposky, CEO and Co-Founder of Canopy, said:

“Upgrading a live onchain application is where most infrastructure quietly breaks, which is why even the most popular onchain apps rarely upgrade. We made it a non-event, and the part we are proudest of is that it is not a one-time trick. Every team building on Canopy inherits the same ability to evolve their application without asking their users to notice.”

That is the real point behind the announcement. Once code is live on a blockchain, changing it is both difficult and risky. By design, smart contracts are immutable: to ship a real change, you deploy a new version and migrate users, or you use complex proxy contracts. This constraint is well known to developers: any change, in principle, requires deploying a new contract.

As a result, most onchain apps change as little as possible, as rarely as possible, to the point where you can often count their versions on one hand. That is precisely what Canopy says it wants to flip with Canopy Auto Update: make upgrading routine instead of rare.

Canopy presents itself as an agent-native development framework for launching sovereign onchain apps and dedicated blockchains. The idea: condense complex application infrastructure into readable code (the company cites roughly 200 lines) so that developers, but also AI agents and non-technical founders, can design, deploy and evolve a complete application in a single session.

The project raised $8.5 million in a seed round in June 2026 (with Arrington Capital, Fenbushi Capital, Borderless Capital and SNZ Capital), a round meant to fund the mainnet and tooling. On its public testnet, Canopy claimed strong traction (hundreds of thousands of virtual chains created and more than 100,000 daily active wallets by mid-2026). On the team side, co-founder Adam Liposky comes from Pocket Network, a Web3 infrastructure he helped scale, a background that explains the focus on upgrade resilience.

To grasp what “evolving your application” means here, one recent case is telling. In April 2026, a Canopy engineer built a Polymarket-style prediction market app from scratch in about twenty minutes, using Claude Code. The workflow: describe the concept in plain language, let a model produce a clean specification, translate it into a Canopy architecture, iterate on data models, then deploy.

Another illustration of this continuous-evolution logic: Canopy announced this summer a partnership with Fhenix to offer confidential apps, where user data stays encrypted even while it is being processed, without teams having to build a cryptography stack themselves. The rollout is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. In both cases, the idea is the same: lower the technical barrier and let an application grow after launch.

Beyond in-place upgrades, Banyan brings fuller compatibility with standard Ethereum tooling. For a team building on Canopy with the tools it already knows, that means less friction between what those tools expect and what the network actually does. The upgrade also introduces several performance improvements.

According to Canopy, the underlying stake is this: an application that can evolve safely can find its market and scale, while one that cannot evolve eventually freezes because change has become too expensive. With mainnet now live, the ability to keep improving without disruption becomes, in the company’s framing, a survival factor as much as a technical selling point.
