Bitlayer And Sundial Partner To Launch BitVM-Powered Bitcoin Bridge, Enabling Cross-Chain Interoperability With Cardano

In Brief

Bitlayer has partnered with Sundial to develop a BitVM-based Bitcoin bridge, enabling two-way interoperability between Bitcoin and assets within the Cardano ecosystem.

Bitlayer And Sundial Partner To Launch BitVM-Powered Bitcoin Bridge, Enabling Cross-Chain Interoperability With Cardano

Layer 2 Bitcoin scaling platform Bitlayer announced a collaboration with Sundial, a hybrid Layer 2 protocol built on Cardano, to develop a Bitcoin bridge based on the BitVM framework, designed to enable two-way interoperability between Bitcoin and assets within the Cardano ecosystem. According to current progress updates, the BitVM Bridge is in its final testing stage and is expected to go live on the mainnet later this month.

Cardano, which operates as a proof-of-stake blockchain, currently hosts more than 1,990 projects developing decentralized applications on its network. The upcoming integration of the BitVM Bridge could introduce a trust-minimized method of accessing Bitcoin’s liquidity for these applications.

The initiative aims to allow Cardano-based users to interact with Bitcoin’s liquidity and security features, provide BTC holders with access to Cardano’s application layer and transaction capacity, and promote enhanced interoperability across blockchain networks.

Sundial functions as the Optimistic Rollup Layer 2 solution within the Cardano network. This joint effort with Bitlayer is intended to lower barriers for Bitcoin liquidity entry, giving BTC holders a way to engage directly with decentralised finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFT), and other decentralized services on Cardano, while also bringing new BTC-based liquidity into the ecosystem. BitVM Bridge, as developed under Bitlayer, has already formed alliances with six other blockchains and protocols—namely Base, Starknet, Arbitrum, Sonic, Plume Network, and Sundial—with plans to expand its network integration further.

What Is Bitlayer And Bitcoin Virtual Machine?

Bitlayer is a Layer 2 blockchain solution developed on top of the Bitcoin network, aiming to improve scalability and programmability while maintaining the foundational integrity of Bitcoin’s base protocol. The platform applies the Bitcoin Virtual Machine (BitVM) framework to introduce Turing-complete smart contract functionality, which makes it possible to create decentralized applications and financial services directly on Bitcoin’s underlying infrastructure.

Through the implementation of BitVM, Bitlayer supports the execution of advanced computational logic and smart contracts, enabling a broader range of decentralized use cases without altering Bitcoin’s original design or compromising its security model. With the introduction of the BitVM Bridge, Bitlayer allows users to lock their BTC on the main Bitcoin network and receive corresponding assets, such as Peg-BTC, on compatible Layer 2 systems, supporting secure and efficient cross-chain asset movement.
