Bitget Launches Open Custody Network, Connecting Institutional Custody With Crypto Trading

The new network enables eligible users to access Bitget’s spot, margin, and futures markets while keeping their assets with independent banks and institutional-grade custodians.
Bitget, the world’s largest Universal Exchange (UEX), has announced the launch of its Open Custody Network (OCN), an initiative designed to connect banks and institutional-grade custodians with Bitget’s trading infrastructure.
The new network aims to change the traditional relationship between asset custody and exchange trading by allowing eligible users to maintain custody of their assets with external providers while accessing trading opportunities on Bitget.
Separating Custody From Trading
Traditionally, centralized cryptocurrency exchanges have combined asset custody and trade execution within a single platform. Users typically need to transfer their funds directly to an exchange before accessing its trading services, concentrating both custody and execution risks in one venue.
Bitget’s Open Custody Network introduces an alternative approach, bringing together independent custody providers and the exchange’s trading infrastructure. The initiative focuses on custody flexibility, institutional-grade security, capital efficiency, and access to connected liquidity.
Through OCN, eligible users can trade on Bitget without transferring the underlying assets into the exchange’s direct custody. The model is intended to provide a more integrated trading experience while giving users greater control over where their assets are held.
Access to Spot, Margin, and Futures Markets
The network connects independent custody providers with Bitget’s spot, margin, and futures markets through an asset-mirroring mechanism. This allows eligible users to deploy externally held assets across trading strategies while maintaining their preferred custody arrangements.
The solution is particularly relevant to market makers, asset managers, and other institutional participants seeking to reduce custody concentration risk while maintaining access to exchange liquidity.
By connecting external custody infrastructure with trading services, OCN aims to improve capital efficiency and offer institutions greater flexibility in managing their digital assets.
Bitget Puts Custody Choice at the Centre
Commenting on the launch, Gracy Chen, CEO of Bitget, highlighted the company’s intention to challenge the conventional exchange custody model.
“We challenge the assumption that users must place their assets in an exchange’s custody to access its trading capabilities,” said Chen. “Our proposition, ‘Assets in Bank, Tradings on Bitget.’, puts custody choice at the centre of that approach. For the first time, users can leverage world-class liquidity and capital efficiency with lower barriers and zero compromise on custody.”
The launch reflects a broader shift in digital asset infrastructure, where institutional investors increasingly seek solutions that combine independent asset safekeeping with access to centralized trading liquidity.
