7,000 MetaMask Users' Email Addresses Exposed in a Third-Party Provider Hack

One of MetaMask’s third-party providers was hacked, leading to users’ personal information exposure. MetaMask developer ConsenSys shared the announcement on April 14.

MetaMask is one of the most used cryptocurrency wallets. The platform belongs to ConsenSys and partners with several third-party providers. On April 14, hackers accessed one of the provider’s databases that processed customer requests. The computers contained users’ personal information and submitted customer service tickets.

To use customer service, individuals must submit their email addresses and other necessary information regarding their requests. The page also contained a blank field where users specified their “economic or financial information, name, surname, date of birth, phone number, and postal address,” even though ConsenSys’s customer service does not request additional information.

According to ConsenSys’s blog, the incident might have affected approximately 7,000 users that submitted customer service tickets between August 1, 2021, and February 10, 2023. These individuals should stay vigilant as they might receive an elevated amount of phishing emails. Notably, the MetaMask browser extension and mobile application were not affected.

At the time of writing, ConsenSys has eliminated unauthorized access. The third-party provider is currently working with the cybersecurity and forensics teams to investigate the incident.

“We are putting further measures in place in order to address and mitigate known or possible adverse effects,” says ConsenSys in the blog
