Zano Hard Fork 6 Set To Unlock Cross-Chain Native ZANO Access, Expanding Into DeFi Liquidity And Exchange Integrations

Zano‘s Hard Fork 6 is scheduled to activate at block 3,833,000, with the upgrade projected to occur on or around August 26, 2026. The update represents the most substantial change in the privacy-focused Layer 1 network’s seven-year history and is intended to eliminate a technical obstacle that has previously limited the project’s integration with external services.

Currently, users are able to bridge assets including BTC, ETH, and SOL into Zano, where those assets receive the network’s privacy protections. Following the activation of HF6, the bridge will operate bidirectionally, allowing native ZANO and supported Confidential Assets to move outward to transparent networks such as Ethereum, TON, and Solana. While on these external networks, the assets remain public and only regain Zano’s privacy features when they are bridged back to the native chain.

The upgrade does not alter how privacy functions for existing users. Instead, it expands which services are able to connect with Zano. Gateway Addresses provide centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, bridges, and other platforms with a more straightforward integration path, removing the need for the custom engineering that was previously necessary. As a result, native ZANO will be able to move across chains in a non-custodial manner for the first time, while standard Zano addresses retain their existing privacy characteristics.

“Hard Fork 6 could make a real difference for Zano’s adoption, as it opens an easier path for ZANO into DeFi liquidity pools and broader exchange listings, with Zano already in touch with platforms including THORchain and other DEXs about post-HF6 integrations,” said Quinten van Welzen, Head of Growth at Zano in a written statement. 

Technical Foundations and Future Development

The significance of this upgrade extends beyond Zano itself, as it tests whether a privacy-focused asset can access liquidity on public chains without compromising privacy on its native network. Zano operates on a UTXO model, which is essential to how the chain achieves untraceability and concealed transaction amounts. However, this architecture presents challenges for services that operate at scale. Each time a bridge or exchange verifies a balance, it must reconstruct the current state from the chain’s history and assemble spendable outputs. Standard institutional custody and integration tools were not built for this workflow, meaning that supporting Zano historically required specialized engineering for issues that do not arise on account-based chains.

Gateway Addresses introduce a new account-based address type that functions alongside the existing UTXO addresses. Services using this address type receive a single, directly tracked balance with instant synchronization. 

“The UTXO model is fundamental to Zano’s privacy, so replacing it was never the goal,” said Andrey Sabelnikov, Co-founder and Lead Developer at Zano in a written statement. “Gateway Addresses add the account-style state that large services need while preserving the privacy guarantees of standard Zano addresses,” he added. 

This addition is complementary to the protocol rather than a compromise against it, and users who continue to transact through standard addresses maintain the same privacy model as before.

At activation, the bidirectional bridging capability will run through Bridgeless, covering EVM networks, TON, and Solana. Over the longer term, Zano intends to build its own bridge on ZEL, an upcoming EVM-compatible Layer 1 with its own proof-of-stake consensus.

Several important limitations accompany this release. Native ZANO remains private on the Zano network, and standard Zano addresses along with their privacy behavior are unaffected by HF6. Privacy ceases at the boundary with public chains, meaning that when ZANO moves to a transparent network, it leaves Zano’s privacy protections behind until it is bridged back. Additionally, Bridgeless remains early-stage infrastructure, and its validator network and production maturity are still developing.

Hard Fork 6 also introduces several other protocol improvements. These include stronger consensus through tighter and more uniform validation rules alongside a more decisive fork-choice rule, hardened wallet encryption that makes stolen or copied wallet files significantly more difficult to crack, per-output payment IDs that allow exchanges and merchants to reconcile payments cleanly while keeping recipient privacy intact, more resilient mining pools that can dry-run a block before finalizing it to drop problematic transactions rather than stalling, tougher and more private nodes with new anti-DoS limits and SOCKS5 proxy support for routing traffic through Tor, and a hardened RPC surface for safer third-party integrations.

The deployment of Gateway Addresses on mainnet is a prerequisite for the upcoming Zano Execution Layer, or ZEL. ZEL is an EVM sidechain that will bring smart contract functionality to the ecosystem while Zano’s Layer 1 continues to serve as the privacy chain. Standard Solidity contracts and development tooling including Hardhat, Foundry, and MetaMask are expected to function without modification, with audited contract libraries also anticipated to work from launch. Bridged ZANO will serve as the native gas coin, enabling applications such as lending markets, automated market makers, and yield opportunities for ZANO and Confidential Assets like fUSD within the ecosystem.

“Zano is not adding transparent smart contracts to its private base layer. Zano L1 remains the private chain, while ZEL provides a separate, publicly verifiable environment for EVM applications.” said Pavel Nikienkov, co-founder of Zano in a written statement.

The transfer of assets between the two chains constitutes a deliberate and visible boundary. Activity on Zano remains private, while once value moves to ZEL, the bridged amount and subsequent contract activity become public.

ZEL is an EVM-compatible sidechain connected to Zano through a threshold-signature bridge. It is not a rollup and not a private EVM. It runs its own Cosmos SDK and CometBFT proof-of-stake consensus and reaches its own finality. Native ZANO is locked on Zano and represented one-to-one as ZEL’s gas and settlement coin, so there is no new inflationary gas token and no ZANO premine on ZEL. A separate fixed-supply asset, stZANO, carries consensus staking and governance. The planned application set includes cross-chain transfer, cross-chain swaps, a collateral-backed stablecoin, and lending. ZEL is currently in active development, with prototype work on bridge flows and swap messaging already merged.

Zano has also published Zenith, its next consensus protocol. Zenith is a pure proof-of-stake design built on Zarcanum’s privacy foundations and developed with Common Prefix. Under currently proposed parameters, blocks will arrive every 15 seconds in epochs of roughly 10 minutes, with older epochs pruned to a compact cryptographic skeleton so that faster blocks do not result in a heavier chain. Zenith is on the roadmap for the second quarter of 2027, with a published paper from June 2026.

Zano is a privacy-first Layer 1 with confidential transactions, hidden amounts, stealth addresses, and Confidential Assets, which are private tokens issued directly on the chain. Its co-founder, Andrey Sabelnikov, led the development of the original CryptoNote codebase, which helped form the technical foundation for Monero and other privacy-focused projects.
