OpenClaw 2.0 Released In Largest Update To Date With Multiplayer Cloud Sessions And Redesigned Interface
OpenClaw has released version 2.0, described by the project as the most substantial update in its history. The release comprises over 16,000 pull requests and was developed by 933 contributors, of whom 569 were first-time participants.
According to project lead Peter Steinberger, the development cycle marked a deliberate shift in approach: whereas the team had previously shipped 106 releases in 230 days, the nearly two-month gap preceding this launch allowed for a simultaneous overhaul of both the platform’s technical foundation and its release processes. The extended timeline was used to ensure compatibility for both new users and those upgrading existing installations, rather than prioritizing speed at the expense of stability.
The update introduces changes across the entire platform, encompassing installation workflows, messaging, memory systems, skills architecture, model integrations, automations, browser and native applications, plugins, and security. A central objective was reducing friction for first-time users.
The installation process now leverages existing resources on a user’s device, including active ChatGPT or Claude subscriptions, existing API keys, and locally hosted models. Previously required configuration steps have been either eliminated or deferred, allowing users to initiate their first conversation more quickly and complete setup through dialogue with the system itself.
From Individual Tool to Collaborative Platform
The browser application has been rebuilt as a first-class interface, opening directly into conversation with the user’s agent and serving as a hub for ongoing work and configuration. Beyond interface improvements, OpenClaw 2.0 expands the platform’s scope from individual automation to collaborative workflows through shared cloud sessions. This multiplayer architecture allows multiple users to enter live sessions, collaborate on tasks, or transfer work between team members without loss of contextual history.
The platform’s design philosophy centers on progressive complexity: a user might begin with a simple workflow, such as monitoring an inbox for school communications and forwarding alerts via Telegram, then gradually extend the agent’s reach across additional services and communication channels. The shared session capability extends this model to teams and families, enabling collective ownership of automated workflows.
OpenClaw remains fully open source, a positioning the team emphasizes as central to its long-term vision. The project is presented not as a proprietary product tied to a single company or AI provider, but as infrastructure that users can modify, extend, and control. This release, according to the team, represents a step toward treating software as an owned, customizable asset rather than an externally designed tool to be passively accepted.
