OpenAI Announces Ona Acquisition To Advance Enterprise AI Workflows And Persistent Agent Execution

AI research and deployment company OpenAI announced plans to acquire Ona, a company specializing in secure cloud execution and orchestration technology, in a move aimed at expanding the capabilities of its AI coding platform, Codex. The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, with both companies continuing to operate independently until completion.

The acquisition comes as Codex experiences rapid growth, with OpenAI reporting that more than five million people now use the platform each week for research, analysis, software development, automation, and other complex tasks. Originally focused on assisting software developers, Codex has evolved into a broader productivity platform capable of supporting work that unfolds over extended periods rather than within a single session.

According to OpenAI, Ona’s technology will enable AI agents to operate within secure, persistent cloud environments, allowing them to continue tasks beyond an active user session or individual device. The integration is expected to help organizations deploy AI agents in production settings while maintaining access to the tools, systems, and context required for long-running workflows.

Ona has built cloud-based development environments used by approximately two million developers, enabling software projects to be accessed and managed from virtually any device. The company’s infrastructure supports secure, reproducible environments and has increasingly been adapted to support AI agents that require ongoing access to data, tools, and enterprise systems.

Focusing on Enterprise AI Workflows

Ona Chief Executive Officer Johannesburg Landgraf said in a post on social media platform X that the combination of the two companies is intended to accelerate the shift from laptop-based AI interactions to cloud-based workflows that can span software development, business operations, and knowledge work. Under this model, AI agents can continue executing tasks inside enterprise-controlled environments while maintaining access to approved resources, permissions, and operational context.

Both companies emphasized that enterprise adoption of AI depends not only on speed and automation but also on security, governance, and reliability. They argued that organizations require clear controls over deployment, credentials, data access, and runtime environments before AI systems can be trusted with critical business functions. Persistent cloud-based environments are viewed as a way to provide the oversight and collaboration needed for large-scale deployment.

OpenAI said the acquisition aligns with its broader effort to build AI systems capable of handling sustained work across the software lifecycle. Potential use cases include testing software, resolving technical issues, modernizing legacy applications, addressing security vulnerabilities, and supporting long-running operational processes.

Following the completion of the transaction, the Ona team will join OpenAI and work alongside the Codex division to develop secure enterprise execution capabilities. The companies said the goal is to make AI agents more effective in real-world business environments while enabling organizations to manage complex workflows with greater security, continuity, and control.
