Ethereum’s Execution Layer Specification Paves Way for Inclusive Development

In Brief

EELS is a Python-based reference for the execution layer that is current with the mainnet. It can complete tests and has passed existing ones.

Ethereum Execution Layer Specification Makes Development Accessible to Everyone

After more than a year in the works, the Ethereum Foundation has publicly launched the Ethereum Execution Layer Specification, referred to as “EELS”.

Developed with a focus on readability and clarity, EELS will serve as a Python-based reference implementation for the core components of an Ethereum execution client.

According to the company, it aims to be a more developer-friendly successor to Ethereum’s Yellow Paper. EELS provides full snapshots of the Ethereum protocol at each fork, simplifying the tracking process for developers.

The Fall of Ethereum’s Yellow Paper

The project began in 2021 as a collaborative initiative between ConsenSys‘ Quilt team and the Ethereum Foundation. Initially dubbed as the eth1.0-spec, the motivation for creating EELS stemmed from the complexities and academic tone of the Yellow Paper, which proved to be a stumbling block for developers.

EELS aspires to be a more accessible, executable specification of Ethereum’s execution layer.

While EELS is currently available as a Python repository and as rendered documentation, its development is still an ongoing process. The platform aims to further enrich its documentation and annotations in the coming times.

While the platform exists as Python code, its purpose extends beyond mere coding. It strives to be a dependable guide for how Ethereum functions, simplifying the process for core developers and EIP authors.

Streamlining Ethereum Development

The Ethereum Foundation believes EELS to be a fundamental tool for the Ethereum ecosystem. The platform aims to become the default choice for defining Core Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) and the go-to resource for prototyping these

By offering a complete snapshot of Ethereum at each fork, it alleviates the complexities often associated with tracking changes through the Yellow Paper or multiple production clients. Programmers of any level will be able to work with smart contracts.

The Ethereum Foundation and ConsenSys’ Quilt team have released the Ethereum Execution Layer Specification (EELS). It’s a Python-based reference designed to clarify Ethereum’s execution client. As it develops further, EELS could become a valuable tool for Ethereum developers.

For normal users, this change may seem minor. However, this move could be a game-changer not only for developers, but also for the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies.
