At Baidu‘s annual World Conference in Beijing, Robin Li — CEO of Baidu introduced the company’s latest generative AI model, Ernie 4.0. Robin Li showcased Ernie 4.0’s generative AI prowess to the crowd at a Beijing event, claiming the new version of the AI model to be a significant competitor to OpenAI’s GPT-4.
Li’s presentation highlighted Ernie 4.0’s memory capabilities and real-time content generation capabilities, with the model now having the ability to craft novels, design advertising materials and generate videos within minutes. But, many experts present at World Conference reportedly say that Ernie 4.0’s launch appeared to lack substantial upgrades compared to its predecessor, leaving many questioning the nature of the “new” enhancements.

Baidu also shared further key announcements at the event, announcing the integration of generative AI technology across all Baidu products, including Baidu Drive and Baidu Maps. During the event, Baidu’s Chief Technology Officer, Wang Haifeng, shared that Ernie now has 45 million users since its public launch. The company’s Hong Kong-listed shares experienced a 1.32% decline during early trading, a stark contrast to the broader Hang Seng Index’s 0.7% rise.
During the demonstration, CEO Robin Li also showcased Baidu Maps’s new capabilities of executing user commands via natural language queries, all powered by Ernie. Previously, users were compelled to navigate through a labyrinth of options manually.
As one of China’s largest internet search engine, Baidu aims to take the lead in domain of AI models in China, an ever-growing AI race catalyzed by the global fascination of challenging OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Notably, Baidu had previously unveiled ErnieBot —- a chatbot powered by Ernie’s capabilities, although initial investor anticipation waned when confronted with pre-recorded demonstrations.
In August, the company secured a government endorsement for the release of its AI products for general public. China currently houses a staggering 130 large language models (LLMs), representing 40% of the global total, second only to the United States’ 50% share.
Last week, Beijing unveiled proposed security prerequisites for firms offering AI-powered services, including a blacklist of inadmissible sources for training AI models. This move underlines the country’s commitment to AI regulation and its growing influence in the field.
