What is Citrea?

Citrea is a rollup that leverages Bitcoin’s blockspace enhanced by zero-knowledge technology, allowing applications to be built directly on Bitcoin without modifying its consensus rules. It features a Type 2 zkEVM, which processes transactions in batches and generates succinct zero-knowledge proofs for easy verification. These proofs are inscribed on Bitcoin and are optimistically verified through BitVM, ensuring data availability and open access. Citrea also supports lightweight nodes using STARKs, making blockchain verification more accessible. Additionally, it establishes a trust-minimized two-way peg with Bitcoin, utilizing $BTC as its native token, known as $cBTC within the Citrea ecosystem.
